WORKSHOPS

MMW: Two-Day Intro to Self-Portraits
How do we make an image of ourselves that moves beyond simple description? What elevates a self-portrait into the realm of narrative or universal? How can we use our own bodies to illustrate a concept or an idea? This class will help students answer these questions and more by studying the history and techniques of self-portraiture, photographing at home, and reviewing photos together.
We all have a story to tell, ideas and identities that are uniquely our own. Whether we are telling the story of one or many, we are our most accessible and agreeable subjects. The only requirement is a willingness to be vulnerable. This class is for those who are new to self-portraiture, as well as those who might need a push with current self-portrait projects.
The first class will cover the history and styles of self-portraiture. We will also discuss the best methods of photographing yourself, as well as how location, gesture, and lighting can help create mood and narrative. We will review student work the following week and create action plans for moving forward.
Note: This workshop will be held in a live, online format utilizing the Zoom platform.
Class meets on two Saturdays, Mar. 14 & 21 from 10am-2pm ET.
